It's amazing how invested we have become in a TV show. People are already talking about freaking out now that the end of our beloved show is like a light at the end of the tunnel. Only, it's the light of a locomotive coming right at us.
How are you being affected? ... right now? as each day brings the finale closer?
And in the minutes after the finale is over? The next day? What about Thanksgiving day? ... the show will be over for two days by then. Will it be on the back of your mind? And what about the first Tuesday after the finale? What about when you start getting excited about the next season and then remember that there will not be a next season?
Are you a person who can just quit this show cold turkey emotionally and move on to something else? Are you going to be depressed? Or are you somewhere in the middle?
It will be interesting to follow how people feel as time moves forward, how they feel when TS is in the rear view mirror, how long it stays in that mirror, etc.
This thread can go on for as long as people still feel any aspect of TS in their system ... and that could be a very long time.

I honestly don't know how I'll react. I've never actually been so thrilled with a TV show as I have been with The Shield - every other TV show that I've hit fanboy status over has turned shit before it ended, and therefore made me indifferent.
The Sopranos didn't have a horrible ending per se, but I was never really a rabid fan of the show -- I wasn't invested too much in the characters to begin with (in fact, I found them all completely reprehensible), so while I respected the show and understand why it gets the praise it does, I was never that excited about what was going to occur next. The ending didn't impact me so much. Same with The Wire, really - I power-watched seasons 1 to 3, but then just... stopped. I still have 4 and 5 to watch, and they're sitting right there, and I'll get to them, but I feel no urgency. The Wire is great, don't get me wrong - but again, the emotional connection, the edge of your seat nervousness, is not there, as it is with The Shield.
I think my reaction will be entirely dependent on how satisfied I am - if it's a great ending, I will be both giddy like a school girl, singing its praises for years to come, and be really, really happy that it ended. If it's a horrible ending, I will be absolutely pissed beyond words, and I will be foaming at the mouth, and I will argue why the season sucked until I am blue in the face, and I will try to forget season 7 existed -- because this Season is ALL build up to the climax. Without an awesome pay-off, this season means nothing. There is almost no-such thing as a stand-alone episode this season -- hell, stand-alone episode's haven't existed since sometime during season 5.
If it's somewhere in the middle, I think that is when I'll be the saddest. If it doesn't suck, but they don't reach the full potential and milk the 7 years of the show's history for all that it's worth -- most notably, A BIG, IN YOUR FACE, FINAL CONFRONTATION BETWEEN SHANE AND VIC THAT RESOLVES THE TWISTED RELATIONSHIP THAT HAS BEEN *SO* PIVOTAL AND *SO* CENTRAL TO THE SHOW -- then I will be grieving.

Honestly, I was excited at the start, getting shit going. Parracide got the blood really pumping. It gave me that nervous, "Holy shit, it IS ending!" feeling. Sinking. The following episodes, and the time between, filled me with dread and a mix of emotions.
Then I lost it for a week or so. Lost it in "That lovin' feelin'" sense, not break down lost it.
Now, as you said, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel it's returning everytime I remember there's only two left and they're happening over the next TWO weeks. The only way I can describe the feeling is this: It's as if you're in big trouble as a kid, but having a really great day for a bit...then remember, f*ck in a few hours I'm going to get the shit beat out of me.
I'm not sure how the end will hit me. I'm already excited at the prospect of re-booting the series the following Tuesday.
I won't lie, I have looked for 'replacement' shows. Not in the sense that they'll be equal to TS (Ha!), but something to fill that slot. CRASH started recently, and after 4 episodes, I'm out. It started out with a decent bang (litterally!), but there wasn't enough to hold my attention.
The only other thing on the horizon is LEVERAGE on TNT, I think it starts Dec 5. Looks really awesome.
God. The Shield ending is a lot like getting to have a relationship with someone that's virtually perfect to you, then dumps you.

I'm going to cry. This I know. I know I'll be filled with nostalgia and sadness, but will my tears be tears of anger because the writers let me down, or tears of pride because they gave me the ending The Shield deserves? I've been saying, "I may need therapy," for a while now... and I was only half kidding.

I'm going to be a bit happy. The Shield has officially owned my soul ever since the pilot episode of Season 1. Every time I think I'll get my soul back, The Shield does something awesome and keeps it for another year. So, now I'm glad to finally get it back for real.
Unless the finale is so awesome the show carries my soul to the grave with it. I don't know what the hell I'd do then.

I think it is going to be a huge relief however it ends. I need closure, I need to stop spending my days wondering what is going to happen and how the heck they are going to get out of this mess. I need that weight off my mind. In saying that, without some freak memory losing accident, we are never going to experience watching these last two episodes for the first time EVER AGAIN. TS has consumed my life for so long now that there will be a void where there once was anticipation, anxiety, excitement, worry, fear, hate, love for every character. When Lem died a lotta people said it felt like they were losing a brother, when TS ends it's gonna feel like losing the whole family.
It makes me feel sick to the stomach to think that approximately 9 days time we'll all be watching... and then.... it will all be over.

I will miss it, but for a while, it will just feel like the end of the season, not the end of the series. I just hope the ending is good enough and will live up to 7 season of the most riviting show ever!
As far as a replacement, there will be none, but I will cling to my other favorite shows (none of which are even close to the shield) like The Unit, and Rescue Me. Sons of Anarchy is just ok, and will not sooth my Shield needs at all. I did have high hopes for a Kurt Sutter vehicle.
2 Greatest shows ever were The Shield and The Sopranos, and we all know the Sopranos ending SUCKED! Actually even if the sheild has a good ending, I will be pissed if Vic dies or heads off to Jail. He needs to walk away clean!!!!! Screw everybody else, Vic needs to get away with it all!!!!!!!

This can be a daily journal ... each day should have a different effect. Sort of like someone on death row, knowing their execution date is 9 days ahead. What do they think of? OK, so it's not the same ... it is an analogy. All analogies are wrong. But they serve a purpose.

On the Sopranos tip...
My theory that season 5's in my favorite shows are usually the best. Soprano's was a really really good show, but it had many many faults. It would have kept me more in touch had it stuck with the mafia aspect. The Melfi stuff just bored the crap out of me. A lot of people hated the ending, I didn't. I didn't love it, either. I thought it ended like any other episode. Had they not killed off many key players in the last few episodes, it woulda felt like the show went on hiatus for years. Which it did.
In fact, F*CK the Sopranos.
God, I'm going to miss The Shield.
My wife has always been interested, but never caught up, so we will be doing the DVD reboot every Tuesday after the finale.

I keep trying to convince myself that my head will win out, and I'll think, "Yes, objectively speaking, it's time for the show to bow out." I want the show to have the series finale it deserves, and that we as fans deserve.
For a while, my heart was winning, though. I thought, "This show could keep going. I actually want it to keep going, in all honesty." Now, though, I think my head is prevailing. It's time for the series to reach its conclusion, on its own terms, with full integrity.
I will miss it, though, that I cannot deny.
