From the FX website: "Claudette offers Vic a chance to keep his job, but only if he agrees to train his replacement, Kevin Hiatt. An unsolved abduction/rape case from Dutch and Claudette's past comes back to haunt them. Aceveda meets an influential businessman who could further his political aspirations. Dutch has mixed emotions as Tina's star rises in the department." From TVGuide.com: "Vic's replacement, Det. Kevin Hiatt (Alex O'Loughlin), arrives at the Barn, and Claudette orders Vic to train him. If he does, she tells him, he might not be forced out. In their first case together, they search for a gang revolutionary who's wanted by a Farmington gang lord. Meanwhile, Aceveda makes a deal with a developer that lands the San Marcos murders back in the Barn, and Dutch is surprised to hear that Tina has transferred. He's more surprised to see her on an LAPD publicity poster." From SpoilerFix.com: "The Strike Team gets a new member called Kevin. Vic is training him. Some ex gang-members are starting a war against other gangs, while they are being hunted down for leaving the gang. There are a lot of murders in the Latino community and Aceveda tries to stop that. A girl is raped. There is a shootout at a pizza joint, and Vic tries to save a man who was shot." "The New Guy" was written by Sarah Fain and Liz Craft. It was directed by Clark Johnson. ======================================== Was this a good episode? What rating did you give this episode and why? hope everyone liked the episode,
the episode was great
I love how raw the shield still is,
the scene when they found the girl that was being raped, and when Julien and Dany saw the car moving with the guy on the hood, its just raw the way they film and they continue to give us a great show
Vic deserves an emmy and a golden globe for just these last 2 episodes,

I felt this episode was kind of weak, but still very good. Vic blowing a gasket at the end made the show for me. Billings is getting all the one liners. He is great. Julian on the strike team? Not so sure about that. Shane is a tortured soul and looking forward to next week.

Gave it a B and that was only because of the last 5 minutes or so. Otherwise it would have been a C. I thought it was quite boring. I did not hate Hiatt as much as I thought I would.
Tisk, tist Claudette. Doesn't she know telling a lie to Vic is just troble waiting to happen. I can already see that Aceveda and the S.M. murders will be Vic's ticket to stay around. I'm ready for Shane to eat his gun, Vic/Ronnie to smoke him, or go to jail. If killing your friend and being an all around bitch wasn't bad enough now you can add pedophile to that list.
Billings and Dutch may as well move there shit into Claudette's office since instead of Billings and Dutch being partners it is more of a trio.
I don't see why Julien thought that the ST wouldn't accept him. Unless I missed something Vic and the other havn't given him any shit since he snapped Carlsons arm.
When the first view of the new cop posters in this episode I wondered why a familar face wasn't on it. That got flipped around though in about 20 minutes with Tina on it. I hope Dutch gets her back to the barn otherwise the eye candy is gone.

an absolutely terrible episode.
and this is coming from someone who regularly rewatches every season of the shield daily. my obsession with the show is dorky, and frankly, unhealthy.
but i give this episode an F. i'm seriously upset about it.

Care to elaborate?
Overall I did feel this was a somewhat weak episode -- but still great in comparison to most any other show. That dream bit did play into Vic's breakdown, which was good, but the telling of it and the details of the dream itself were pretty lame.
I really enjoyed the way the book delivery brought them all crashing back to the pain of Lem's death, especially when they couldn't save that guy. A nice touch.
Really liking the Dutch/Billings combo. Hiatt has me interested as well.
People are gonna bitch about how Claudette's a bitch, but she's just being a smart captain who's trying to get a corrupt cop out of her station. I know, most of you are Vic-enables, but I can completely see why she lied to Vic... though it'll probably backfire on her.
Really didn't care for the Tilly angle. It seems too tacked on and Shane seemed too close to her considering it's only been a few days since they first met. It just happened too fast to feel convincing.

ok, first, let it be known that i've been with this show since i first saw it years ago. i haven't been this hooked on a piece of visual entertainment probably in my entire life. i rewatch all the seasons all of the time. in fact, my obsession with this show is pretty unhealthy and rather dorky. but...
one of the best things about this show is that it's always been deep without being obvious about it. subtext playing a major role in the writing. characters haven't always had to say exactly what they mean in order to get messages across to it's audience. but this episode was the most over-the-top bullshit they've done so far. from the terribly stupid dream (fear of burgers???), to stuff like "1 down, 3 to go!", to the strike team's over the top hatred of the new guy, shane walking in going "well, lem's dead! glad to see everyone happy!" to corinne's dream making vic lose it like that!? you have to be kidding me.
i truly hope this isn't a sign of the rest of the season/series. this episode is the first in the entire series that i haven't liked.
still my favorite tv show of time, no doubt. and i can't wait until the next episode,
removed statement about the preview for next week.

I'll have to give this episode a C. And here's my rants for the episode:
I want to like Hiatt but this guy really needs to open his eyes and fast or he won't last the season. Also, he's too smarmy and tries to sound too clever for his own good. Maybe I'll like him as time goes by but so far he's no Lem. And speaking of...
That dream sequence stuff still makes no sense to me but it proves that Vic is still losing it and may have now realized that Lem is dead because of him. Also, it reminds me of a Tarot card I once saw called The Fool. It shows a guy carrying a jug of water but oblivious to the fact that he's about to fall off a cliff while a little dog grabs at his legs to pull him back. I don't know, but maybe the metion of the cliff in the dream brought it back. Everything else still kind confuses me, but that's just me.
Claudette's lie will come back to bite her. Vic is like a child that way...he'll only go out kicking and screaming and that's after throwing the hissy fit in his own way.
And as for Shane and Aceveda...well, I've learned in life that there are two different kinds of assholes-one who develop their charming personalities over time and the ones who are just born that way and can't help being what they are. Aceveda is the first type and Shane is obviously the second. Aceveda for the obvious reasons (his own gain) and Shane...well, just for being Shane. Nice of him to just rub the guilt he feels in everyone's face so they feel it too. Misery sure does love company. I would say that I missed the old Shane but that's obviously a lie but he came back in sorts tonight. Maybe Vic and Shane won't get out of their respective problems so easily career wise after all after that little tidbit of foreshadowing during that little chat together.
Billings showed some assertion tonight as well. That's just kind of creepy.
I tried to like this episode as much as the other's but it just felt a little off but I'm pretty sure next week's will fix that.

I liked the "1 down, 3 to go" line I don't think the team is that hostile to Hiatt -- it's almost all Shane. Vic's giving him pointers because it's in his self-interest and Ronnie talked a little shit, but he did shake Hiatt's hand and said hi when he showed up. He is, after all, Vic's replacement and it's been what, two weeks since Lem's death? But overall, I think it is being a little forced in places. Maybe not forced, but just compressed. I really wish they had been given 13 episodes this season.

I don't quiet get all the scathing reviews. I thought 2 and 3 were kind of light for me, just didn't feel like the same old Shield. That changed when I seen the 4th I dunno what the difference is between viewers, besides the obvious ahaha. We just have different sets of standards cause of who we are and what we've been through, but I disagree. I like the first Ep, I was kind of jaded by 2 and 3 and 4 felt like it was back to what I expected.

I thought the worst part of the episode was:
Dutch: "What about Tina? She out sick?" Claudette: "Transfered out." I said: "You gotta be shittin' me."
I knew these 'Shield' writers would screw me over. I'm mad. Gave this episode a "D".

Billings is showing what a creepy sexist a**hole he really can be. He also can sure dish out the shit, but always refuses to listen to constructive criticism when it is his turn.
Aceveda is out for his political aspirations, as usual even if that means hanging out Claudette's ass on the line if things go bad or grabbing the glory if it goes well. He is such a dick.
Claudette is wrong to lie to Vic about his retirement. How would she like to have her job on the line like that? I don't care what her reasons are.
Hyatt is over eager and looks promising, but I don't trust him...yet. He did make a comment to Claudette about Vic doing well in the field and she simply brushed it off by saying he was only being shown Vic's good side.
Shane is going train wreck. I can see the downward spiral like a Nine Inch Nails record that is stuck on skip...the skip where Lem died.
I almost cried when Vic lost it at the end. Great emotional performance! Terrific acting. Chiklis is the bomb.
You Shield rappers are rating this episode too low, IMO.

FYI: I gave it a "B" because everything but the dream was good. I am trying to connect whether or not the dream really had that big of an impact on Vic's breakdown at the end. I'll probably write more later....I sorta have an 8 page paper to finish typing by 11:00AM GOOD NIGHT! don't mention spoilers in this thread please.

Well, the dream kind of alluded to Vic making promises. Vic promised himself he would keep that kid Vantes alive and that failed. That threw him back to Lem.

I've been waiting patiently to post this rant:
Claudette makes me sick.
She's blatantly lying to a man that wants and needs to keep his job. This man also has two autistic kids and needs to provide, remember Claudette?
She's giving him false hope about the appeal hearing, which is never going to happen. And lying to Vic was her own play, not something that the 'brass' asked her to do.
Where are all her holier that thou bullshit speeches about how 'The only way to change this place is through the truth', etc etc??
To summarize: I'm a Vic-enabler. Although I agree that Claudette's tactics make sense from her perspective, I dont give two shits about Claudette being a good captain and I couldn't care less about her point of view.
And one more thing: What's this, Claudette has her 'own people' now and is trying to stack the strike team in her favor? She's really settled into the power chair quite nicely. Just goes to show...
Beyond that, I agree with xer0signal that certain things seemed forced, principally the whole dream sequence. I also felt that the 'saving the ex-banger' symbolism at the end was a tad contrieved but at least it seemed realistic. The dream was just meh.
Regarding Hiatt: Its too early in the game to feel anything about him, IMO. He's still learning, still being cautious. He hasnt made any moves to show us what he's really like.

quite possibly the worst Shield episode ever - and it's a Clark Johnson one no less - absolutely no focus, weak stories, the Hiatt character is completely lame (so far anyways - hopefully that will improve) - the 'dream' angle was stupid, Billings is getting incredibly annoying (even though he's right in most cases) - Shane's self-pity is getting pretty overbearing (but at least Ronnie is holding down the emotional fort) - and I'm sorry, that Chiklis ending was about the biggest piece of ham I've seen (I've always thought that was the one weakness is MC's otherwise solid acting chops) - and poor writing for Dutch - just when he was starting to get moved into the forefront of the larger investigation story he's hit with yet another blast from the past and prevented from moving forward (and it's too bad they aren't going to just let Tina fade away - that poster makes such a nice parting image - all the better to torture Dutch - but obviously they will somehow force the issue between the two of them) - the Go Home rapist will probably have a house full of cats when Dutch finally catchs him - strictly a treading water episode until the shit hits the fan next week
(can't vote in the poll but a D from me)
