I have been watching S03 and listening to the commentaries, of course. I think all of the actors invited to the comment sessions (not just Chiklis) are showing remarkable growth and insight into the roles they've been playing.
It's interesting to me that they say things like "When *I* did this or that..." speaking in terms of what their character was doing in the story. They rarely say the character's name instead now.
I was under the impression that actors always avoided speaking in first person about their characters... but these guys are doing it without hesitation.
I am always intrigued by their statements regarding the craft itself... the training and skill that goes into making a scene work, bringing out the chemistry between characters when the actors are still strangers, etc. Fascinating.
Chiklis comments about the scene in Bottom Bitch where he storms into the foster home to check on Brian, Connie's kid. He says the first time he played it, it was all aggression. Even though the scene was accomplished, he asked to reshoot. He says he didn't flesh it out the first time. The final cut is one of much more complexity...a wide range of emotions, which is basically the theme of that entire ep...and one of his finest moments, imho! It took some study, however, for me to see what Chilkis was talking about.
I was also intrigued by his commentary about the alley scene in Bottom Bitch... where he shoves his Glock into the skank's mouth. He told the actress he was sorry but he intended to do it and make it real. You can hear him grimacing during that scene, though, as if it is hard for him to watch what he's doing to her. The chemistry between the two at that moment is unbelievable...that actress is truly frightened but they've got to trust each other enough to play it out.
Cool stuff, Maynard!
