The end of Delivering the Baby was both cool and very sad... you could really see how Walton was broken up about Kenny leaving. Kenny's speech as the end was really touching. I was waiting for Shawn Ryan to yell after his speech "Now keep your f*cking mouth shut untill this airs!" I had the episodes on the Tivo so I started with the deleted scenes after the extra stuff, and there is a really good one for "Of Mice and Lem" and then made even better with the commentary for it.

In the middle of the Delivering the Baby segment right now. Had to stop to make dinner. I had to stop too. I didn't think it would be that long. I like it alot better than the "Breaking 3.15" from S3. A couple of petty complaints. I don't like the small box either. They also could have kept off "Academy Award winner FW" off too, but I'm sure that was from a suit at FX. One vast improvement over the "Breaking Ep 3.15" is that this new featurette has Chapter Breaks, which make it easier to find your place later. The one from Season 3 was simply too long to not be broken up. Sure, the skinny white boxes look ridiculous next to my other sets, but the content mostly makes up for it. I'm overjoyed that The Shield has returned to Season 1 form and put a commentary track on every single episode. I'd listen to an FX janitor talk about cleaning up after Ryan & Chiklis if that's what they put on there.

I GOT MINE!!! I ordered mine on Amazon so it came in the mail yesterday and I didn't have to go anywhere to get it!! YAY! I was watching the "Delivering the Baby" segment last night and found out that Kenny Johnson didn't LEAVE the show, as I originally thought ~ they killed him off! Has Shawn Ryan lost his frickin' mind???!!! We were under the impression that Kenny had voluntarily left the show. When we found out different we were PISSED!! I think it's the dumbest thing they ever did. They take the one character who has heart and a soul and kill him off. Stupid. Some of you might disagree with me, but that's how I feel. Lem was my daughter's favorite character, and after seeing him tormented all season by that dick Kavanough and then to kill him off? NOT COOL. Grrr......

But Kenny himself agreed with the artistic merit of the decision. Ryan and his writers are not stupid, they're brilliant.
I think The Shield would be a far lesser show if they decided to placate everyone's wishes and had all the guys end up on the beach sipping martinis.

They killed Lem because the show is about telling a good story.
If you can't see Lem's death as a masterstroke of storytelling then I feel sorry for you.

Bailey, note E's reference.
Of course, we all loved lem, but stealingjoy and electroshockblues hit the nail on the head. Actually, the fact that you reacted the way you did is testament to the points they made if you separate yourself from your emotion and think about it. If you can't do that, maybe you should stop watching the show to spare yourself from further anguish.

all i have to say is WOW @ the special features.. it doesnt have ALOT of different things but it does have quite a few very very long special features and alot of commentary
unlike most shows this has commentary on EVERY episode.. 9 deleted scenes which isnt alot but nice but ill be damned.. the delivering feature is long, the panel is very long and the scrott brazil tribute was fantastic and LONG
special features rock.. the packaging although i dont dig the new skinny look (rescue me, the unit etc) because it looks a little weird to me.. im used to the big fat ugly boxes lol but the packaging is good.. the dvd cases are awesome the whole red/black

Got mine yesterday. I had to write an essay on of the stylistic qualities of film noir, study for a history quiz (just took it), write a summation on the history of the ancient town of Jerash... argh...
So, I just stayed up late and watched episodes 5x01, 5x07, 5x10 nd 5x11 with their commentaries on. And I watched the "I.A.D." featurette, and then the Scott Brazil tribute. Then I watched all of the deleted scenes, both with Shawn Ryan and Jay Karnes' commentary and without it. (I can happily say I didn't think any of the deleted scenes were big losses, although some may disagree about the lesbian stripper scene in 5x10.) The prequel was a nice little taste. It's a little awkward because it's so short but I thought it was a decent little way to get people excited about the new season (Vic/Shane reactions at the funeral alone made it worthwhile, and Lem's crushing of that big guy with a hurt arm made even the most hardened fan of the series unreasonably happy, all with "Lemonhead" chants from the rest of the Barn, no less).
I always do this, and I know it's incredibly lame, but anyway, I love to grade the commentaries. It's like a postmodern version of grading the actual episodes a year later.
5x01 commentary--Walt Goggins, Michael Chiklis, Kenneth Johnson, David Rees Snell, D.J. Caruso and Kurt Sutter: Absolutely hilarious at times, although if you're looking for serious in-depth background info about how the show works you'll most likely be disappointed. Goggins gave Caruso a lot of kudos on how well directed the episode was; Chiklis exalted the crew for being such gamers in the face of such odds; Johnson was ribbed for "being dead"; Sutter revealed that he was in Catholic school for 12 years and is therefore now a psycho of some kind; Chiklis did a funny Jackie Gleason rip when he saw Tina decked out towards the end of the episode... Chiklis also admitted that he felt physically sick when Jon first hauled Lem away from his house and started interrogating the guy. A good commentary that sets a solid tone. B+
5x07 commentary--Adam E. Fierro, CCH Pounder, Jay Karnes, Emily L. Lewis (am I forgetting someone?): Completely sleepy. Fierro is clearly a gifted writer but when it comes to guiding commentaries he needs to get organized, haha. He even admits in the final 2 minutes that people usually listen to these so they can extract a lot of background info regarding the show. Some pretty pedestrian conversations, about "favorite moments" (Karnes says the Pilot still stands out for him) and how it feels for the actors to have their characters (Dutch and Claudette) now separated. CCH Pounder had some trouble remembering what the heck was going on in this episode, though she gave Bill Campbell props as Kleavon for being such a good actor. Eh... C
5x10 commentary--Anthony Anderson, Kenneth Johnson, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Benito Martinez, CCH Pounder and Michael Jace: Though there are actually six people on this commentary, it's actually surprisingly well balanced as Kenny asks questions of his castmates and Gwyneth, who offered her first directorial effort here. Gwyneth says she tried to hide the fact that she was very nervous when making the episode; CCH Pounder actually whispers to her character "don't take it" (meaning the captain's job--I found this interesting); Kenny made me laugh my ass off when he said, following Vic's "sweet butter" line, "What did he say?"; Benito is really awesome, I just like this guy--he seems like almost the polar opposite of Aceveda--completely warm, kindhearted, caring, and very jovial. I liked Jace's comments about how to play Julien in the face of the glory-hole storyline (very insightful and truthful). Anthony Anderson had some fun laughing about many plotlines, but he also made some good points regarding Vic/Shane/Ronnie in the warehouse "getting in deeper and deeper" (he clearly relished the fact that Antwon pretty much pulls the strings from prison in this episode, and, honestly, I thought it was a brilliant story as well). A
5x11 commentary--Shawn Ryan, Kenneth Johnson, Walton Goggins: everything you'd expect. The final moments had me really emotional, as Kenny was told by his friends thanks for everything. A very warm conversation about acting, about having an acting home with a long-running TV show and how hard it was for Kenny to say goodbye to it. Ryan says he wanted a really great hook finish line to get people to return for the next season and of course he got it with Vic vowing vengeance (say those three latter words five times fast). Walton says his experience on NYPD Blue was a little slice of hell (in more words than that) and Kenny says he wants to find work that is inspiring, not just working "for work's sake." A great commentary, if a little soft in the midsection where they get into the business side of it, which I found a little tedious. A-
Really looking forward to the other commentaries and the other special features I haven't gotten to as of now.

Oh geez ya'll give me a frickin' break! Chemikalman ~ why would you say something like that? My GOD! Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. If I can't voice my opinion here, then maybe it's not another show I need to find but another board. I can't believe ya'll jumped on me like that ! There's been plenty of times I haven't agreed with something one of you said but I didn't say crap like that to anyone else! I wasn't aware of what Glen Mazzara said. I DIDN"T KNOW! So excuse me! Maybe I DON'T think Lem's death was a "masterstroke of storytelling" and if "electroshockblues" can't understand that not everyone feels the same way he does than I FEEL SORRY FOR HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Goddamn! I guess I'll keep my opinions to myself from now on. That kind of crap belongs on the FX board, not here. Or so I thought. I guess I was wrong. Maybe I DON'T think killing off one of the best characters on show is brilliant. I never said Shawn Ryan and the writers were stupid I said killing off Lem was, I don't care who came up with it.
